Trauma-informed therapy is a compassionate and supportive approach to counseling that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma on individuals and prioritizes safety, empowerment, and healing. This type of therapy is designed to create an environment that feels safe, validating, and respectful, helping individuals feel secure as they work through difficult emotions and experiences. If you find that certain situations trigger intense reactions, or if you’re seeking a therapist who understands the impact of past trauma, trauma-informed therapy could be an effective choice.

In trauma-informed therapy, therapists are trained to understand trauma’s effects on the brain and body, and they adapt their approach to avoid re-traumatization. This means your therapist will be attentive to your comfort level, guide you at your own pace, and focus on empowering you to feel in control of your healing journey. Trauma-informed therapy can be beneficial for people dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other issues related to past traumatic experiences.

How Does Trauma-Informed Therapy Work?

Trauma-informed therapy involves several key principles and practices to support healing in a safe, respectful manner:

  1. Ensuring Safety: The therapist prioritizes creating a physically and emotionally safe environment, so you feel secure in each session.

  2. Building Trust: The therapist is open, transparent, and consistent, helping to build a trusting relationship at your pace.

  3. Empowering You: Trauma-informed therapists focus on empowering clients, giving you the ability to make choices and feel in control of your healing.

  4. Respecting Boundaries: Your therapist respects your boundaries, allowing you to share only when you feel comfortable.

  5. Recognizing Triggers: The therapist helps you identify and understand trauma triggers, so you can build awareness and avoid re-traumatization.

  6. Promoting Self-Compassion: Trauma-informed therapy encourages self-compassion, guiding you to treat yourself with kindness and patience as you heal.

Childhood Psychology

The trauma-informed approach has roots in the mental health and social services fields and was developed in response to the need for more sensitive, supportive care for trauma survivors. In the 1990s, researchers and clinicians recognized that traditional therapies could inadvertently cause harm to trauma survivors by triggering or reactivating traumatic memories. To address this, trauma-informed practices were developed, integrating principles from psychology, neuroscience, and trauma research. Trauma-informed therapy is now widely used across the mental health field and in various settings, sometimes referred to as “trauma-sensitive therapy” or “trauma-responsive care.” Today, this approach helps individuals feel understood, supported, and empowered on their journey to healing.
